NocturneFor Mac

Dark mode for any PDF.

Nocturne turns bright documents dark for reading at night. Text stays sharp and searchable, colours keep their meaning and photos are left exactly as they were.

What it gets right

Inverting colours turns photos into negatives. Nocturne rebuilds each page instead.

  • Text stays text

Pages are rebuilt with their vectors intact, so every word can still be selected, searched and copied. Links and bookmarks keep working.

  • Colours keep their meaning

Red warnings stay red and chart bars keep their hues. A slider sets how bright colours stay, and highlights always darken behind the text.

  • Photos stay true

Photos are found on every page and left as they were, or dimmed if you prefer. Dark banners and code blocks stay dark.

  • Scans too

On a scanned page the paper turns dark and the ink turns light, while printed photos are left alone.

  • Five themes, or your own

Graphite, Midnight, True Black, Ember and Forest, plus any background colour you pick.

  • A folder at once

Drop in a stack of PDFs or a whole folder and get a dark copy of each. The Make PDF Dark action brings the same conversion to Shortcuts.

Questions

Good to know.

How do I make a PDF dark on a Mac?

Open the PDF in Nocturne, pick a theme and choose Export Dark PDF. The dark copy is a normal PDF, so it stays dark in Preview, Books and any other reader, on Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Is it different from inverting colours?

Yes. Inverting flips everything, so photos become negatives and red turns teal. Nocturne darkens the page and the text but keeps photos as they were and colours close to their original hue.

Can I still search and copy the text?

Yes. Pages are rebuilt with their text and vectors intact, so the dark copy stays sharp at any zoom and every word can be selected, searched and copied. Links and bookmarks keep working.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. Nocturne runs entirely on your Mac and has no network access, and it can only open the files you choose.

Private by design

Everything happens on your Mac.

Nocturne has no account, no analytics and no network access, and it can only open the files you choose. Password-protected PDFs stay protected, because the dark copy is locked with the same password.
